You can use DeepSeek's official chat at chat.deepseek.com without any subscription or API billing. My first thought was "something must be getting charged in the background." After checking, that worry seems unnecessary. And the model running under the hood is surprisingly good.
As of August 2026, the web and app versions of the chat are completely free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. This post covers what it feels like to actually use it, plus the model and settings worth knowing before you go free.
If there's no subscription, what's being consumed?
Short answer: nothing. The chat is separate from the API, so no balance and no token credits get used up.
The free tier does have a soft daily cap on usage. Use it nonstop and you may be asked to wait for a while. Logging in with an account raises the cap, but it still costs nothing. That's DeepSeek's model in a nutshell: give away the chat, earn from the API.

The model behind it is V4-Pro
The model question is the one that matters. As of August 2026, the web and app chat runs on DeepSeek-V4-Pro. chat.deepseek.com splits it into "Expert Mode" and "Instant Mode," and DeepSeek's April release note says both modes let you try the latest model.
The July 31, 2026 update upgraded the V4-Flash API, but the official note explicitly says the APP/WEB models are unchanged. In other words, the free chat screen is running what the API side would call the flagship model.
First impressions: responses feel like a patient tutor
The first thing I noticed is how direct the responses are. Compared with GPT-family models, they don't drift into emotion, but they don't turn robotic either. It feels less like "being taught" and more like "figuring it out together." Ask it something and it actually listens before answering.
It's the opposite of the R1 line's "watch me think in circles" deep-dive mode. Reasoning is kept in the background, and the answers keep a normal conversational temperature. That "patient tutor" feel is genuinely comfortable. A lot of people will probably prefer this over the free ChatGPT tier.
One quirk: if you let it reason for a long time, the answer sometimes slips back into Chinese mid-response. Re-prompting it brings it back to Japanese, so it's not a big deal, but it does show up now and then on heavy reasoning tasks.
You can also turn off training use
The privacy side is a quiet win too. In the web and app settings, there's an option to stop your conversations from being used to train the model. I turned it off and it works.
DeepSeek's privacy policy also documents the right to refuse use of personal data for model training and technical optimization. Being able to opt out of training data on a free AI chat is still rare.
That said, DeepSeek is a Chinese company, and data is stored on servers in mainland China. Avoid pasting confidential information or customer data into the free chat.
This caution isn't specific to DeepSeek. Every free AI chat service is designed on the assumption that your input may be used for training or service improvement. The only real difference is whether you can opt out of training use. "Don't paste confidential information into any AI" is the rule that applies everywhere.
Wrap-up
The official DeepSeek chat is completely free with no subscription. It runs on V4-Pro, and nothing gets consumed in the background. You can even turn off training use, which is a solid privacy option for a free service.
