Four Practical Ways to Use DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731: API, OpenCode Go, OpenRouter, and Self-Hosting

On July 31, 2026, DeepSeek released DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731. The “0731” label identifies this release snapshot. In the official API and OpenCode Go, the model ID to use is documented as deepseek-v4-flash.

This guide compares the most practical ways to use the model as of August 2, 2026.

Some posts call it “DeepSeek V3 Flash 0731.” The official release name is DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731, so do not confuse it with an older V3 model.

What stands out about the model

DeepSeek’s official specifications list a 1M-token context window, thinking and non-thinking modes, tool calls, JSON output, and Responses API support. The model has 284B total parameters and 13B active parameters during inference.

DeepSeek reports major agent improvements, including scores of 82.7 on Terminal Bench 2.1, 54.2 on NL2Repo, and 54.4 on DeepSWE. These are useful signals, but they were measured with specific settings and agent infrastructure, so treat them as benchmarks rather than a guarantee for every workflow.

Option 1: Use the official DeepSeek API

The official API is the cleanest choice when you want to integrate the model into an application or script. It provides an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, and the model name deepseek-v4-flash points to the latest 0731 release.

The official price is $0.0028 per million input tokens on a cache hit, $0.14 per million input tokens on a cache miss, and $0.28 per million output tokens. Since it is usage-based rather than a fixed subscription, it is easy to start with a small workload.

curl https://api.deepseek.com/chat/completions \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $DEEPSEEK_API_KEY" \
  -d '{
    "model": "deepseek-v4-flash",
    "messages": [{"role": "user", "content": "Summarize this text."}],
    "thinking": {"type": "disabled"}
  }'

This route works well for summarization, classification, JSON generation, internal tools, and content workflows. The very low cache-hit price is especially useful when the same long system prompt is reused.

Option 2: Use it as a coding agent through OpenCode Go

If you want the model to read a repository, edit files, and run tests, OpenCode Go is one of the easiest options right now. Go costs $5 for the first month and $10 per month afterward. Its model ID is opencode-go/deepseek-v4-flash.

OpenCode’s documentation lists five-hour, weekly, and monthly usage limits. For DeepSeek V4 Flash, it estimates up to 158,150 requests per month for a typical request pattern. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed request count: actual usage depends on input, cached, and output tokens.

Example configuration:

{
  "model": "opencode-go/deepseek-v4-flash"
}

For repository work, the agent workflow can be much more useful than a standalone chat window because the model can inspect context, propose a patch, and continue through tests and review.

There is an important privacy caveat. OpenCode Go’s privacy table marks DeepSeek V4 Flash as “used for model training” with “no agreement” for data retention. It may be convenient for public code and ordinary tasks, but do not paste customer data, API keys, unpublished contracts, or personal information into this route.

Option 3: Use OpenRouter for provider switching

If you already use OpenRouter, you can try the model with the ID deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash-0731. OpenRouter currently lists a 1M context window and prices of $0.09 per million input tokens and $0.18 per million output tokens.

The advantage is convenience: one API format and key can cover DeepSeek and other models. OpenRouter is useful for fallbacks during provider outages and for comparing the same prompt across models.

The official DeepSeek API and OpenRouter do not necessarily have identical pricing, caching, or data handling. Check provider selection, logging, retention settings, the served model, and the final cost before moving a workload into production.

Option 4: Self-host the weights

For teams that cannot send data to an external API, the Hugging Face weights can be served with vLLM or SGLang. The model card includes OpenAI-compatible serving instructions, and the weights are released under the MIT license.

This is not a “download it to a normal gaming PC” option. A 284B-class model requires substantial GPU capacity, a suitable cloud instance, and operational expertise. Self-hosting makes sense when traffic is high, privacy requirements are strict, and the team can keep the hardware busy.

Which option should you choose?

For an individual trying the model, start with OpenCode Go. For an application or automation job, use the official DeepSeek API. For multi-model testing and fallback routing, use OpenRouter. For strict data isolation at scale, consider self-hosting.

For a practical ZIDOOKA workflow, use OpenCode Go for public-code and interactive agent work, then reserve the official API for article generation and repeatable automation. “DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731” is the same release family, but the route changes the price, limits, and data policy. Choose based on the data you will send and the agent features you need—not only on the headline price.
