GitHub Copilot's "Auto" Model Selection is Quietly Revolutionary — Especially When You're Paying After Using Up Free Tier

Claude Sonnet 4.5 showing 0.9x (10% discount)

Recently, "Auto" model selection was added to Copilot in VS Code. Honestly, at first I thought, "Oh, just another convenient-looking setting they added."

But when I actually researched the specifications and applied them to my current usage, this turned out to be a quite practical update.

The Landscape After Using Up the Free Tier

I've already exhausted Copilot's free tier and am currently on a paid plan. In other words,

  • "Which model should I use?"
  • "Should I use an expensive model for this task?"
  • "Am I wasting cost on this interaction?"

These thoughts constantly lingered somewhere in my mind.

This is subtle, but it definitely consumes mental resources.

What Auto Does is Actually Quite Fundamental

Reading the official documentation, the essence of Auto is simple:

  • Only among available models (permitted by contract/policy)
  • Automatically selects the optimal model based on task content
  • Moreover, premium request consumption gets a 10% discount (0.9x)

In other words,

From "always running expensive models at full throttle" To "using high-performance models only when necessary"

It's forcibly optimized.

When you think about it calmly, this is quite powerful.

What's Really Hot About It

The 10% price discount itself is nice, but that's not the real big deal.

"You don't have to think about model selection" This is everything.

  • Is this query heavy or light?
  • Which model is appropriate?
  • What's cost-effective?

Humans no longer need to make these judgments every time.

This is the same kind of evolution as:

  • No longer being conscious of CPU clock speeds
  • No longer manually managing memory

While using the free tier, honestly this value is hard to see. But when:

  • You've used up the free tier
  • You use Copilot for work daily
  • You throw everything at it – code, writing, research

In this state, "where to allocate mental resources" becomes extremely important.

From that perspective, Auto is:

  • Without degrading accuracy
  • While reducing cost
  • Making mental cost nearly zero

A highly polished mechanism.

Auto Specifications (Official Information Summary)

According to official documentation, the following is guaranteed:

  1. Uses Only Permitted Models

    • Models disabled by contract or policy are not selected
    • You can see which model was chosen by hovering in the chat screen
  2. 10% Discount Mechanism

    • 10% discount applied to premium request multiplier
    • Example: Normal 1x model → Counted as 0.9x when using Auto
    • For Claude Sonnet 4.5: Normal 1x → 0.9x with Auto
  3. GA (Generally Available)

Conclusion

For now,

  • Regular use → Auto is the only choice
  • Only when there's a clear reason → Manually specify model

This is the best balance.

Choosing models is no longer human work. What humans should do is formulate proper questions.

Copilot's Auto has advanced that division of roles one step further.
